Trans-Yamuna Wooden Craft Heritage Sirmaur District

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The trans-Yamuna region of Sirmaur district (also called Jaunsar-Bawar in cultural terms, straddling Sirmaur and Uttarkashi districts) has a tradition of wooden architecture and craft with Jaunsari cultural influences. Traditional wooden houses with intricately carved balcony railings, door frames, and decorative elements reflect Kath-Khuni architectural traditions. Local wood carvers produce decorative furniture panels, architectural elements, and religious objects using sal, shisham, and oak. Traditional lacquer work on wooden surfaces using traditional resin lacquers creates colourful decorative effects on storage boxes, spinning tools, and decorative items. Women embroiderers in this belt use chain stitch techniques related to broader Himachali embroidery traditions. Craft markets in Nahan provide outlets for these traditional products.
