Junga Orange and Citrus Cultivation Shimla Lower Hills
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Junga area at lower elevations of Shimla district between 600 and 1200 metres supports citrus cultivation including oranges, mandarins, and lemons that grow in the warmer subtropical conditions. Traditional citrus orchards in these lower hill areas provide fruit to Shimla town markets and beyond. Traditional propagation using cuttings and grafting maintains specific variety characteristics. Citrus processing into squash, marmalade, and pickled lemon products extends the value of seasonal fruit. The fruit growing zone of lower Shimla provides economic alternatives to grain cultivation on terrace farms where citrus commands higher returns. Community orcharding cooperatives manage marketing and quality grading to improve prices received by smaller growers.
