Shimla Apple Orchards: Himachal's Golden Fruit Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Shimla district is the heartland of Himachal Pradesh's apple industry, producing millions of boxes annually that supply markets across India. The introduction of apple cultivation in the 1870s by American missionary Samuel Stokes in Kotgarh transformed the hill economy. The Royal Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Fuji varieties dominate commercial orchards while heirloom varieties survive in traditional home orchards. Apple growers have developed sophisticated orchard management knowledge including thinning techniques, frost protection methods, altitude-specific variety selection, and integrated pest management reducing chemical dependence. Apple cultivation supports an estimated 1.7 lakh farming families in Himachal Pradesh. The state accounts for over half of India's total apple production making it a critical part of the national fruit economy.
