Mandi Shivratri Fair: The Winter Devta Confluence
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Mandi Shivratri Fair held in February-March is one of Himachal Pradesh's most important festivals where over 200 village deities from across Mandi district converge at the Paddal Ground in Mandi town. The week-long fair combines religious devotion, cultural performances, and commercial exchange in a format maintained for centuries. Each deity's palanquin procession through the town creates a pageant of traditional art and community devotion. The fair's scale and organisation reflects the ancient Devta governance system of Himachal Pradesh. Folk performances including Nati dance, traditional music, and theatrical presentations celebrate Himachali cultural heritage. The fair serves as a major social gathering renewing family connections, conducting marriages, and resolving community disputes under the combined presence of the assembled deities.
