Suinket River Traditional Water Management Hamirpur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Hamirpur district's agriculture depends on traditional water management using the Suinket, Suketi, and other seasonal streams. The kul system of gravity-fed irrigation channels diverts stream water to terraced fields through community-maintained earthen channels. Traditional knowledge of seasonal stream flow patterns, snowmelt timing, and spring discharge guides agricultural planning and crop selection. During dry summer months the kul system becomes critical for sustaining terraced vegetable gardens. Community water management institutions (kul committees) allocate water time slots among cultivating households following traditional equity principles. The district's position between the Beas and Sutlej watersheds means springs and seasonal streams are the primary water sources rather than perennial rivers.
