Guntur Red Chilli Tobacco Market Andhra Pradesh Spice
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Guntur district is the world's largest single trading point for dry red chilli — the Guntur chilli market handles over 1 million tonnes annually from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, determining the national benchmark price for red chilli that influences cooking costs across India and export prices to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. Guntur's Sannam (S4, Teja) variety of red chilli is the most pungent commercially grown chilli variety in India (80,000-120,000 Scoville units) and is the primary chilli used in Indian restaurant cooking globally. Guntur is also India's second-largest tobacco producing district after Andhra Pradesh's West Godavari, with flue-cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco grown under Tobacco Board licences that supply cigarette manufacturers.
