Gumla Oraon Karma Festival Tribal Jharkhand
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Karma festival is the most important annual festival of the Oraon tribe of Gumla district, celebrated on the eleventh day of the Bhadra month (August-September) when unmarried youth worship the Karma tree (Nauclea parvifolia) and pray for good harvests, healthy livestock, and auspicious marriages. Girls bring karma branches from the forest, plant them in the courtyard, and dance through the night in Jhumair circle dances singing karma geet folk songs that narrate the story of the karma deity. The festival is a pan-Jharkhand tribal celebration — Munda, Ho, and Santhal communities celebrate versions of Karma — but Gumla's Oraon tradition is considered the most elaborate, with multiple-day festivities involving the village pahan priest, music, and communal feasting.
