Goalpara Bodo Dokhona Weaving Assam

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Goalpara in the Goalpara district of Assam is part of the Bodo-dominated western Assam lower Brahmaputra region where the Bodo tribal community produces the distinctive Dokhona and Aronai textiles on traditional loin-loom using silk and cotton thread with geometric woven patterns unique to Bodo ceremonial and daily dress. Bodo women weave the Dokhona — a two-piece wraparound skirt and top for women — and the Aronai small scarves worn by men, using both mulberry silk from local Eri silkworm cultivation and imported raw silk. The Bodo Dokhona weaving cooperative network supported by the Bodoland Territorial Council provides design training and market access. Goalpara district also produces mustard, jute, and paddy as agricultural cooperatives staples. The Bodoland peace accord has supported cooperative development in BTC administered areas including Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Kokrajhar districts alongside Goalpara.
