Gir Kesar is a premium mango variety grown exclusively in the foothills of the Gir forest range in Junagadh, Amreli, and Gir Somnath districts of Saurashtra, Gujarat. Named for its saffron-coloured flesh, Gir Kesar has GI protection and is known for its rich sweetness, fibreless texture, and distinctive aroma. The mango season runs from late April to June. Gir Kesar cooperatives in Talala taluka of Junagadh have built direct-to-consumer and export supply chains, shipping fresh Kesar to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and export to USA and UAE with APEDA phytosanitary certification. The Junagadh Agricultural University maintains Kesar variety germplasm and provides agronomy advisory to farmers. Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation links cooperative farmer groups to processing units for mango pulp, pickle, and aamras exports. Gir Kesar premium exceeds Alphonso prices in domestic markets.
