Ganganagar Wheat Farming Canal Rajasthan Punjab Border Agriculture
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Sri Ganganagar district in northern Rajasthan, irrigated by the Indira Gandhi Canal (Rajasthan Canal) from the Harike Barrage on the Sutlej river, is Rajasthan most productive agricultural district, known as Rajasthan granary and Punjab of Rajasthan. The canal transformed desert into green fields from the 1950s, enabling wheat, cotton, and mustard cultivation. Sri Ganganagar produces more wheat per hectare than most of Punjab due to ideal sandy-loam soil, abundant sunshine, and canal irrigation timing. Farmer cooperative societies in Ganganagar manage wheat procurement for FCI at MSP and cotton for CCI. The district also produces one of India finest kinnow (mandarin) oranges in Sadulshahar and Raisinghnagar taluks.
