Gandhinagar — Gujarat's planned capital city designed by HK Mewada on the Chandigarh model — houses the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple (2005), one of India's largest temple complexes with ornate white Rajasthani sandstone carving, alongside the state government secretariat and Infocity IT hub. Mehsana district adjacent to Gandhinagar is one of India's dairy cooperative strongholds — the Mehsana District Cooperative Milk Producers Union (DUDHSAGAR brand) processes buffalo milk from the Kankrej cattle zone into the rich, fat-rich milk that supplies urban Gujarat. North Gujarat's diamond cutting and polishing industry is concentrated in Surat but extends into Mehsana-Gandhinagar where small cutting units operate.
