Gadwal Saree Weaving Telangana
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Gadwal sarees from Gadwal town in Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana are distinguished by a unique construction technique: the body is woven in cotton and the border and pallu are woven in pure silk, joined by the interlocking kupadam technique — the cotton warp threads are interlocked with the silk border warp. This produces a saree that is comfortable against the skin (cotton body) with an ornate silk border and pallu. Traditional Gadwal sarees feature temple-style borders with rows of small abstract motifs, and paisleys in the pallu. The craft is GI-certified. Gadwal weaver cooperatives under APDCOT and Telangana handloom bodies support the 5,000+ weaver families in the district. Gadwal sarees are sought for occasions like Sankranti and weddings.
