Faridkot Cotton Ginning Cooperative Punjab
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Faridkot in the Faridkot district of Punjab is located in the cotton-growing Malwa belt of southwestern Punjab where long-staple American cotton and desi Bt cotton are grown on canal-irrigated sandy loam fields and processed at cooperative ginning factories. Punjab cotton farmers have faced severe agrarian distress from the Bt cotton production system, including high input costs, crop failures from pest resistance, and debt cycles leading to what has been termed a farmers suicide crisis in cotton-growing districts. Cooperative primary agricultural credit societies PACSs in Faridkot, Moga, and Muktsar districts provide institutional credit as an alternative to private moneylender debt. Faridkot cooperative ginning factories process raw kapas cotton into clean lint and cottonseed oil cake for animal feed. The Faridkot royal house historical legacy of the Faridkotia state has left institutional foundations including cooperative marketing systems for cotton. The state government cotton procurement scheme through cooperative channels helps stabilise cotton prices in distressed seasons.
