Bhavani Sangameshwara Temple and River Confluence Ecology

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

At Bhavani town in Erode district, the Bhavani river merges with the Cauvery and the mythological Amudha river in a sacred Triveni Sangam (three-river confluence). The Sangameshwara temple at this confluence is one of the most important Shaiva pilgrimage sites in Kongu Nadu, attracting lakhs of devotees for the Bhavani Sangamam festival. The confluence zone is an ecologically significant area where the mixing of river waters creates nutrient-rich conditions supporting large freshwater fish populations — historically an important fishery. The Bhavani barrage immediately upstream regulates seasonal flow, affecting the confluence's ecology. Traditional fishing communities have observed closed seasons at the confluence for centuries, preserving it as a fish breeding sanctuary.
