Ernakulam-Kochi district is Kerala's commercial and port city, where the Chinese fishing nets (cheena vala) — large cantilevered shore-operated fish traps introduced by Chinese traders of Zheng He's 14th century fleet — still operate at Fort Kochi's Vasco da Gama Square as an iconic image of Kerala's multicultural maritime heritage and are photographed millions of times annually. Kochi's Jew Town in Mattancherry — with Paradesi Synagogue (1568), the spice market, and antique shops — reflects the Cochin Jewish community's 2,000-year history and the district's role as a medieval trading hub. The Kochi backwater and Vembanad Lake support one of Kerala's largest inland fisheries, and Kochi port is India's premier container handling port for agricultural commodity exports.
