Fenugreek (Methi) Cultivation in Dholpur's Rabi Season

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), known as methi, is an important rabi crop in Dholpur district, valued both as a leaf vegetable and for its seeds. Farmers sow methi in October-November on well-drained sandy loam soils. Young leaves are harvested 3-4 weeks after sowing and sold fresh at local vegetable markets, providing early income before the main seed harvest. The mature seeds, harvested in February-March, are sold as spice and have significant medicinal value. Methi seeds are a traditional remedy for diabetes: soaking seeds overnight and drinking the water is widely practiced in rural Dholpur. Methi seed paste is used as a hair conditioner and scalp treatment. Dried methi leaves (kasuri methi) are used as a flavouring agent in North Indian cooking. Dholpur's methi is traded to spice markets in Agra and Delhi, with prices varying widely between Rs 40-80 per kg depending on crop quality.
