Datia Morena Chambal Gharial River Dolphin Ecology

The National Chambal Sanctuary spanning Morena and Datia districts of Madhya Pradesh (continuing into Rajasthan and UP) is India's most important protected area for the gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) — the critically endangered fish-eating crocodilian with a distinct long narrow snout — with the Chambal's clean fast-flowing river water and sandy banks providing ideal nesting habitat. Morena district's Chambal bank supports the Gangetic river dolphin and red-crowned roof turtle (Batagur kachuga) alongside gharial, making it one of the most significant freshwater biodiversity sites in peninsular India. Datia's Pitambara Peeth temple is one of the most powerful Shakti shrines in north India, drawing thousands of devotees seeking the tantric goddess Bagalamukhi's blessings for legal and political disputes.
