Bundeli Alha and Rai Performance Tradition of Damoh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Damoh is an active centre of Bundeli folk performance including Alha epic singing and Rai dance. The Rai performance by Bedia women involves acrobatic footwork and improvised verses responding to audience suggestions — a tradition of participatory performance. Damoh melas feature competitions where Rai dancers perform for hours, judged on footwork precision, improvisation quality, and stamina. The dholak players who accompany Rai are themselves specialists whose patterns must respond to the dancer tempo and mood in real time. Bundeli Alha singing in Damoh maintains strong oral memory of the full 52-canto epic, with local bards capable of performing 8–10 hours continuously. The Vindhya Lok Kala Academy based in Damoh has documented and trained 200 performers, creating new economic opportunities for traditional artists who had migrated to casual labour.
