Bela Stone and Sandstone Craft Tradition of Bundelkhand Damoh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Damoh quarries produce Bela sandstone — a warm-red fine-grained stone found in local Vindhya exposures — used by artisans for sculpture, architectural elements, and household grinding equipment. Bela stone grinding slabs are preferred for flour milling because of their medium abrasiveness and mineral neutrality. Temple lintels, carved pillars, and puja vessels are fashioned by local stone workers using iron chisels, mallets, and drill bits. The carving tradition maintains a Paramara-era iconographic vocabulary: lotus medallions, kirtimukha faces, and scroll borders carved in low relief. Modern stone cutters equipped with diamond grinders have accelerated production while maintaining traditional design elements. Damoh sandstone is exported to restoration projects at Khajuraho and other Paramara-heritage sites where compatible stone is required for sympathetic repair.
