Coimbatore district at the foot of the Nilgiris and Anamalai hills is South India's industrial powerhouse — the "Manchester of South India" — with the largest concentration of spinning mills, weaving factories, pump manufacturers, motor winding units, and textile machinery manufacturing in South India. Coimbatore's cotton yarn spinning mills process cotton from the black soil belt of Tamil Nadu (Tirupur, Karur, Dharmapuri) and from Maharashtra into yarn that feeds India's garment export sector. The Palladam-Tirupur belt around Coimbatore is one of the world's largest knitwear production and export clusters, generating over $3 billion annually in cotton garment exports to the US, Europe, and the Middle East.
