Zawar Zinc Mines: World's Earliest Industrial Zinc Smelting

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Zawar mines in Chittorgarh district contain evidence of the world's earliest large-scale industrial zinc smelting, dating from approximately the 9th century CE, more than 800 years before zinc smelting was industrialised in Europe. Archaeometallurgical excavations at Zawar have uncovered smelting furnaces, crucibles, and slag heaps confirming distillation-based zinc extraction on an industrial scale. The operation used galena (lead-zinc ore) from local mines, reducing it with charcoal in clay retorts at 1,100 degrees Celsius to produce metallic zinc vapour that was collected in condensers. The refined zinc was used to produce high-quality brass (bidri), coins, and architectural fittings. The Zawar mines are still operational as Hindustan Zinc Limited's historic facility. This archaeological evidence establishes India's priority in zinc metallurgy, a major contribution to world materials science history.
