Veera Gase Warrior Dance Tradition of Chitradurga
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Veera Gase is a vigorous warrior dance performed by men from the Veerashaiva (Lingayat) community during religious festivals, particularly for Lord Shiva. Performers wear elaborate battle costumes with layered cloth, brass ornaments, and ankle bells, and carry ritual swords and shields. The dance involves rapid spinning, jumping, sword brandishing, and powerful stamping movements meant to display valour and devotion. Chitradurga's martial history — its forts, battles, and warrior traditions — has given this dance a particularly authentic local character. Performances are held at major Shiva temples during Mahashivaratri and the Navaratri festival. The dance form is transmitted within Veerashaiva families and community groups, and has been recognised by the Karnataka Janapada Academy as an important intangible cultural heritage.
