Bamboo Forests and Tribal Economy of Chhota Udaipur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The moist deciduous forests of Chhota Udaipur district, receiving more rainfall than the rest of Gujarat due to the Aravalli hills, support significant bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) growth that underpins the tribal forest economy. Bamboo collection and crafting is both a subsistence activity and a livelihood source for Bhil and Rathwa families. Bamboo is harvested in the dry season when moisture content is lowest, reducing fungal susceptibility. Craft products include baskets, mats, fish traps, agricultural implements (yoke pegs, seedling protectors), and musical instruments. Bamboo shoots (kopal) are consumed as vegetables and fermented for traditional beverages. Forest Rights Act implementation in Chhota Udaipur has given tribal communities formal rights to collect bamboo from community forest areas, reducing dependence on Forest Department permits. National Bamboo Mission supported processing units help artisans produce finished goods for urban markets.
