Bamboo Craft and Satpura Tribal Artisan Tradition of Chhindwara

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Chhindwara Satpura forests support dense bamboo — both wild and cultivated — that sustains a robust bamboo craft tradition. Korkoo and Gond artisans produce a comprehensive range of bamboo goods: baskets for grain, fish traps for rivers, wall panels for houses, furniture, and ceremonial objects. The bamboo splitting technique uses a single-edged knife — the machete-size daa — to produce splints of precisely controlled width and thickness. Different basket types require different preparation: floor baskets use thicker splints, sieving baskets use fine uniform strips, fish traps use fresh green bamboo that dries into rigid cages. Chhindwara district administration has supported a bamboo cluster that trains younger artisans and provides market connections to urban furniture buyers who increasingly prefer bamboo as a sustainable alternative to wood.
