Buxar Ganga Ghats Pilgrimage Battlefield Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Buxar district on the Ganga's southern bank is the site of the 1764 Battle of Buxar where the Mughal emperor, Nawab of Awadh, and Nawab of Bengal were defeated by the British East India Company — a battle that secured British dominance over Bengal and Bihar. Buxar's Ganga ghats at Buxar city are an important pilgrimage site where devotees perform shraddh for ancestors during Pitrupaksha fortnight, with Ramrekha Ghat specifically associated with the legend of Rama's footprints. The district grows mustard, wheat, and vegetables on the Son-Ganga doab, and fishermen from Mallah communities operate seasonal drift nets in the broad Ganga channel for hilsa and catla catch.
