Bikaner Woollen Durrie Carpet Rajasthan
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bikaner in Rajasthan has a centuries-old tradition of weaving flat-weave woollen durries and pile carpets using hand-spun camel and sheep wool. Weavers from Muslim Manihar and Hindu weaver communities set up ground looms in courtyard workshops, knotting geometric and animal motifs in red, ochre, and ivory colour palette drawn from local mineral dyes. Bikaner central jail has for over a century employed prisoner weavers in carpet production, producing internationally exported pieces under state emporium. Outside the prison, cottage weavers in old city lanes produce durries for domestic markets. Bikaner cooperative weavers have been connected with KVIC and Rajasthan Small Industries Export Development through craft clusters for skill upgradation and export linkage.
