Percolation Tank Water Conservation in Beed

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Beed district's water scarcity management has historically relied on percolation tanks (PTs) built on seasonal streams to slow runoff and allow groundwater recharge. The basalt plateau of Beed has low natural permeability, but fractured zones beneath percolation tanks allow significant water absorption into the aquifer. Community percolation tanks built by the Maharashtra MGNREGS programme have measurably improved well levels in treated watersheds within 3-5 years of construction. Traditional water structures in Beed include earthen bunds (banda) across valley bottoms, creating backwater areas that soak slowly into the soil. The Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan deepened and widened streams in Beed, increasing retention time and groundwater recharge. The transformation of previously dry wells into seasonal water sources through watershed treatment has been documented in multiple Beed villages. The village of Hiware Bazar (in adjacent Nashik district) is cited as the model for this approach.
