Tribal Crafts of Baran: Saharia Community Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Baran district is home to the Saharia tribe, Rajasthan's most vulnerable scheduled tribe community, concentrated in Shahabad and Kishanganj tehsils. Saharia women produce traditional grass-weaving crafts using locally harvested sabai grass (Eulaliopsis binata) and munj grass (Saccharum munja), weaving baskets, mats, and rope products using hand-plaiting techniques. Distinctive Saharia embroidery features geometric patterns in red and white thread on dark cloth. Saharia traditional knowledge includes extensive forest ecology: the community uses over 150 forest plant species for food, medicine, and material needs. The Forest Rights Act 2006 has given Saharia communities documented rights over forest produce. Government tribal welfare schemes provide market access for Saharia crafts through emporiums. However, displacement from traditional forest areas has disrupted knowledge transmission between generations, creating urgency for documentation efforts.
