Bankura Bishnupur Terracotta Temple Horse Craft West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Bishnupur region of Bankura district in West Bengal is the origin of the iconic Bankura horse, a stylised terracotta horse figurine that has become one of India most recognised folk craft symbols. The Bankura horse with its elongated neck, forward-tilted ears, and cylindrical body is made by Kumar-caste potters using local red clay from the Bishnupur area. Temples in the Bishnupur town — the Malla kingdom capital — were built entirely in terracotta brick with intricate relief panels depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, establishing the terracotta decorative tradition. Today cooperative potter societies produce Bankura horses in a range of sizes from keychain miniatures to metre-tall garden sculptures. The figurines are sold at Craftsman festivals, government emporiums, and online craft platforms. National Award-winning artisans from Bishnupur cooperatives train apprentices through DCHL programmes. Bankura also produces Dhokra metal casting and Baluchari silk weaving alongside terracotta.
