Bandhani Tie Dye Cloth Jamnagar Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bandhani is a tie-and-dye textile tradition of the Khatri community of Jamnagar and Anjar in Gujarat, using a distinctive technique of tying thousands of tiny pinch-knots on cotton or silk cloth before dipping in successive dye baths to create intricate polka-dot and flower patterns. The finest Bandhani uses silk or georgette base cloth with gold zari thread tie-points creating sparkling effects called shikari-chandni. Traditional Bandhani colours include turmeric yellow, pomegranate red, and indigo blue. Jamnagar and Kutch's Khatri community are the hereditary Bandhani producers. The GI tag protects Gujarat Bandhani. Contemporary Bandhani sarees, odhnis, and dress material are a major export product. Craft organisations support Bandhani artisans with dye-safe certification and design adaptation for fashion markets. The finest Bandhani odhni with gold tie-points is called Gharchola, traditionally gifted at weddings.
