Arid Zone Medicinal Plants of Banaskantha
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Banaskantha's dry deciduous and thorn scrub landscape supports a medicinal plant pharmacopoeia adapted to arid conditions, used by Bhil tribal healers and rural communities. Satawar (Asparagus racemosus) grows in rocky hillsides; its roots are a valued Ayurvedic female reproductive tonic. Arand (castor, Ricinus communis) leaf poultices treat joint pain and headache in folk practice. Satavelo (Withania coagulans, vegetable rennet) is used to curdle milk for cheesemaking and medicinally for diabetes. Galo (Tinospora cordifolia) vine is collected from forest trees for its fever-reducing properties. Tejbal (Zanthoxylum rhetsa) bark is chewed for toothache. Traditional healers transmit plant identification knowledge through apprenticeship in the forest during collection seasons. Market demand for satawar and ashwagandha has led to overharvesting of wild populations, driving cultivation efforts on farm boundaries.
