Bamboo Craft Agartala Tripura Northeast India
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Tripura is one of India most bamboo-rich states, with over 60 percent forest cover and 23 species of bamboo in commercial use, supporting a deep craft tradition among the Reang, Jamatia, Chakma, and Borok tribal communities who use bamboo for house construction, food preparation vessels, agricultural tools, musical instruments, and decorative basketry. Tripura bamboo basketry is distinguished by the fine mat weaving produced by Reang women using thin-split bamboo strips in hexagonal and diagonal weave patterns for floor mats, wall panels, and tray-style baskets used in local markets. The Chakma community of southern Tripura produces tightly woven cylindrical containers with fitted lids used for storing fermented bamboo shoots and dried fish, with geometric diamond patterns in natural bamboo yellow and smoke-blackened strips. Bamboo furniture from Agartala workshops supplies national craft retail, and the Tripura Tribal Areas Cooperative has established a bamboo processing unit at Ambassa to supply semi-processed strips to cottage industry weavers. Tripura bamboo products are promoted under the North East India brand at national handloom and handicraft fairs.
