Bagnath Temple: Kumaoni Temple Architecture of Bageshwar
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Bagnath temple complex in Bageshwar town, at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers, is one of Kumaon's most important Shiva pilgrimage sites. The main Bagnath temple, built in the Nagara style of North Indian Shaiva architecture, dates from 1450 CE according to the Chand Vamshavali inscriptions, though the site's sanctity predates this structure. The temple complex includes subsidiary shrines, sacred water conduits, and ghats along the Saryu-Gomti sangam. The carved stone panels on the temple exterior depict Shaiva mythology with skilled figural work characteristic of Kumaoni temple craftsmanship. The Uttarayani Kumbh Mela at Bageshwar, held at Makar Sankranti (January) every year, is one of Kumaon's largest folk fairs, combining religious observance with a major handicraft and produce market. Traditional pilgrims walk the ancient Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route that passes through Bageshwar.
