Godavari Headwaters and Paithan: Sacred Water Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Aurangabad district contains Paithan (ancient Pratishthana) on the Godavari, the most sacred teerth (pilgrimage site) on the upper Godavari and a city with over 2,500 years of documented history. The Godavari originates in the Brahmagiri hills of Nashik and reaches Paithan as a substantial river. The Paithan Jayakwadi dam and reservoir, Maharashtra's largest, stores 2,909 million cubic metres of water for irrigation in Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts, providing assured water for sugarcane, cotton, and vegetables in the downstream command area. Traditional Paithan ghats maintain sacred bathing traditions; the Dnyaneshwar Udyan (garden) on the reservoir embankment is a popular heritage site. The river management system in the Godavari basin represents one of India's oldest continuously inhabited hydraulic civilisations, with archaeological evidence of tank irrigation from the Satavahana period.
