Asansol Raniganj Coal Damodar Valley Ecology Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Raniganj coalfield in Paschim Bardhaman district is India's oldest coal mining area, with coal extracted commercially since 1774 — predating even Jharia — forming part of the Damodar Valley coal belt that provided fuel for Calcutta's jute mills, railways, and steel plants during Bengal's industrial revolution. The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC, established 1948) dam system controls flooding from the Damodar — historically called the "Sorrow of Bengal" — and provides irrigation and hydroelectric power across the coalfield districts. Raniganj's mining communities — Bengali and Hindi-speaking colliery workers, Santali and Kurmi tribal communities — have historically lived in grid-pattern colliery townships built by coal companies, creating a distinctive working-class culture reflected in jatra drama performances and trade union traditions.
