Areca Palm Leaf Plates and Eco Packaging

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sal leaf plates have long been used in India, but the modern eco-packaging revolution uses fallen areca palm leaf sheaths (from Areca catechu) to produce moulded, biodegradable plates, bowls, and trays — a zero-waste process since no trees are cut. The sheaths naturally fall after each areca nut harvest. They are collected, washed, heat-pressed in iron moulds to produce rigid plates, then dried. The resulting product is food-safe, waterproof for up to 2 hours, compostable in 60 days, and exportable as a plastic alternative. Major production centres are in Odisha (Gajapati, Kandhamal), Assam, and Karnataka. Cooperatives and SHGs in tribal areas produce areca leaf plates under the National Forest Policy's NTFP enterprise programme. Export demand from Germany, the USA, and Japan has made this a significant rural industry.
