Meshvo River Valley: Folklore and Cultural Traditions of Aravalli
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Meshvo river valley in Aravalli district has been a settled agricultural zone for millennia, and its communities have developed rich folklore traditions that blend Rajput, Koli, and Bhil cultural elements. Seasonal folk songs called gheri are sung by women during agricultural work, with call-and-response formats commenting on weather, harvests, and social life. The dasara and holi festivals involve community music and performance traditions distinct from urban Gujarat forms. Traditional oral epics of the Koli community narrate the stories of Koli hero kings like Jesal Toral, performed by professional narrators (bhats and charanas) at village gatherings. The devipuja (goddess worship) traditions of Aravalli include elaborate thali (plate) arrangements of food offerings and flower patterns for weekly household rituals. Women's sangeet (music gatherings) at life-cycle events preserve an extensive repertoire of folk songs in Koli and mixed Gujarati dialect.
