Amritsar Phulkari Silk Thread Embroidery
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Phulkari, meaning flower-work, is the signature embroidery of Punjab practised most intensively in Amritsar district. Women embroider khaddar cotton cloth with untwisted floss silk using darning stitch from the wrong side, creating vivid geometric flowers that entirely cover the surface in the finest bagh variety. Amritsar's phulkari is distinguished by its dense interlocking patterns in saffron, red, and turquoise silk that reflect the agricultural prosperity of the region.
