Amla (Indian Gooseberry) Processing — Pratapgarh UP
Contributed by System
Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), the Indian gooseberry, is the richest natural source of Vitamin C (600–700mg/100g) — 20× that of an orange. Pratapgarh (UP) and Anand (Gujarat) are major production centres. Amla is processed into candy (murabba), juice, powder, oil, shampoo, chyawanprash, hair oil, and amla pickle. Cooperative women in Pratapgarh process lakhs of kilograms annually, earning ₹150–300/day. The KVIC subsidises amla processing units under PMEGP. Dried amla powder (churna) is a staple Ayurvedic formulation. Growing global demand for amla extract in nutraceuticals and cosmetics is pushing farm prices to ₹15–30/kg fresh fruit.
