Tijara Jain Temple: Marble Architecture of Alwar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Tijara Jain Atishay Kshetra in Alwar district is a significant Digambara Jain pilgrimage site housing a Parshvanath temple renowned for its white marble architecture and spiritual significance. The main temple complex was substantially built and expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries with donations from Jain merchant communities across Rajasthan and Maharashtra. The white marble facades feature intricate floral and figurative carving typical of Jain temple architecture, with celestial beings (apsaras), yaksha guardian figures, and the 24 Tirthankaras depicted in detailed relief panels. The temple's economic impact on Tijara town is substantial: pilgrims from across India visit year-round, supporting hospitality, prasad, and craft vendors. Traditional Jain practices of vegetarianism, non-violence, and environmental restraint influence the temple's management, with no leather articles permitted on the premises.
