Mustard Farming in Alwar: Rajasthan Yellow Gold

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Alwar district is one of Rajasthan's top mustard-producing zones, benefiting from fertile alluvial plains near the Sahibi river basin. Farmers sow Varuna and RH-30 varieties in October after kharif harvest, using furrow irrigation from shallow tube wells. The mustard bloom transforms the landscape into golden fields from December to February. Cold-pressed sarson ka tel (mustard oil) from Alwar is prized for its pungent aroma and is used in traditional pickles (achar) and cooking across northern India. Threshing is largely done by tractor-mounted combines now, but older families still use bullock-powered threshers. Seed selection, local weather lore, and crop-rotation practices with wheat are transmitted orally between generations of farming families.
