Almora Copper Craft: Himalayan Metalwork Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Almora in Kumaon is known for its traditional copper and brass craft (tambe ki dhatu kaam), producing ritual vessels, water pots, kitchen utensils, and decorative items. The Tamata (coppersmith) community of Almora has practised this craft for centuries, using hand-hammering techniques on copper sheets and rods. Traditional Almora copperware includes the distinctive tambe ki chamach (copper spoons), karahi (cooking vessels), and ritual pots (kalash) used in temples and auspicious ceremonies. The craft employs both sand casting and sheet-metal hammering techniques. The distinctive Almora style of copper decoration features geometric engraving and repoussé patterns inspired by Kumaoni textile and architectural motifs. The Almora craft cooperative markets copperware through the state handicrafts corporation. Almora's bazaar, a linear hill market with traditional shop-fronts, is recognised as one of Uttarakhand's most intact historic commercial streets.
