Allahabad Surkha Guava — Uttar Pradesh

The Allahabad Surkha guava (Psidium guajava) is India's most celebrated guava variety — large, pink-fleshed, intensely fragrant, and sweet with very low astringency. Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh has produced this GI-tagged variety since the 1800s, benefiting from the fertile Ganga-Yamuna doab soil and a distinct 45°C summer + cool winter cycle. A mature guava tree yields 80–150 kg/year at 40–50 years of age. The fruit contains 4× more Vitamin C than oranges and significant lycopene (pink varieties). India produces 4.5 million tonnes guava annually — the world's largest. Beyond Allahabad Surkha, Lucknow 49 and Apple Guava are commercial varieties. Guava jam, guava cheese, and guava paste are traditional preservation methods. The fruit is ready October–November (winter crop); a summer crop is possible with irrigation. Contract farming by PepsiCo and Dabur sources Allahabad region guava for beverages.
