Agra Traditional Juti Leather Footwear Cobbler Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Agra in Uttar Pradesh is the country footwear capital, producing over 65 percent of all leather shoes exported from India alongside traditional hand-stitched juti slip-on footwear for domestic markets. The Agra footwear cluster employs over 800,000 workers across 15,000 units ranging from single-craftsman cobbler workshops in the old city to large export factories. Traditional juti artisans in Agra old city quarters produce embroidered velvet and leather slip-ons with toe-tip curled upward in Mughal court style using pointed last forms, punch-work leather, and zari thread embellishment. Cooperative producer groups supply finished Agra juti to Uttar Pradesh handloom emporia and export buyers. Agra footwear GI tag was registered in 2018. Cobbler cooperative societies also manage microfinance and raw material procurement for small artisan units.
