In January 2024, Axiom Space successfully launched its third private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS), known as Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3). This historic mission featured the first all-European commercial astronaut crew and set new standards for privately funded space research and exploration.

  • Planned Mission Duration: Approximately 14 days

SpaceX delayed the launch slightly to inspect parachute energy modulators, ensuring crew safety for reentry. The mission was managed by Axiom Space in coordination with NASA and SpaceX.

Meet the Ax-3 Crew

Commander – Michael López-Alegría

  • Former NASA astronaut
  • Holds dual U.S.-Spanish citizenship
  • Extensive spaceflight experience, including previous ISS missions

Pilot – Walter Villadei

  • Colonel in the Italian Air Force
  • Previous suborbital flight experience
  • Background in aerospace engineering and defense

Mission Specialist – Alper Gezeravcı

  • First-ever astronaut from Türkiye
  • Represents Türkiye’s ambitious new national space program
  • Former F-16 fighter pilot

Mission Specialist – Marcus Wandt

  • ESA project astronaut from Sweden
  • Commercial astronaut under ESA’s agreement with Axiom
  • Background in test piloting and avionics

The crew was officially welcomed aboard the ISS and awarded their astronaut pins shortly after docking.

Scientific Research Highlights

The Ax-3 mission focused on a range of microgravity experiments, many of which have potential applications on Earth.

Biomedical Research

  • Cosmic Brain Organoids: In collaboration with the National Stem Cell Foundation, this project studied mini-brain models derived from patients with neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and primary progressive multiple sclerosis.
  • Cancer in LEO: Sanford Stem Cell Institute tested tumor organoids in orbit to evaluate cancer growth and treatment development in microgravity.
  • SASHA Project: Focused on immune cell aging and cancer development using RNA-editing enzymes in blood stem cells.

Skin and Health Studies

  • P&G’s Skin Health Study: Tested Bodewell moisturizing cream to combat dry, irritated skin—a common issue for astronauts in space.
  • TRISH Essential Measures: Collected data on cognitive function, genomics, and physiological changes in astronauts to improve future long-duration missions.

Agricultural and Genetic Research

  • CRISPR Plant Study: Used CRISPR technology to study gene expression in Arabidopsis and Schrenkiella plants under space conditions to improve agricultural stress tolerance.

Educational and Public Engagement

  • ARISS (Amateur Radio on the ISS): Enabled live radio communication between Ax-3 astronauts and students from different countries.
  • Outreach programs aimed to promote STEM education in Europe, Türkiye, and the U.S.

Axiom’s Vision for the Future

Axiom Space Station

Axiom is building the first commercial space station, with modules planned to begin launching in upcoming years. The initial modules will attach to the ISS and later detach to form an independent orbital platform.

Modules Under Development

  • PPTM (Payload Power Thermal Module): Provides core systems like power and thermal control.
  • Habitat Modules: Accommodate astronauts and visitors.
  • Airlock: Supports spacewalks and external payload deployment.
  • Manufacturing & Research Module: Designed for microgravity manufacturing, biotech, and Earth observation.

The commercial station will serve industries such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, Earth observation, and even space tourism.

Global Collaboration and Commercial Spaceflight

Ax-3 reflects the rapid evolution of space as a global and commercial enterprise. With astronauts representing Spain, Italy, Türkiye, and Sweden, and partnerships with ESA, NASA, and national space agencies, the mission underscores the shift from purely governmental space programs to public-private cooperation.

Moving Ahead 

Axiom Mission 3 is a landmark in the commercialization of low Earth orbit. By successfully launching the first all-European commercial astronaut mission and conducting critical biomedical and technological research, Axiom Space continues to lay the groundwork for future human space habitation. With more missions planned and the construction of Axiom Station underway, the era of private spaceflight has truly begun.
