Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, affectionately known as “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic roles, passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 87. His demise marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, leaving behind a legacy of films that instilled national pride and resonated with audiences across generations.

Background and Career

Born as Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, then part of British India and now in Pakistan, Manoj Kumar moved to Delhi during the partition. He graduated from Hindu College, University of Delhi, before venturing into the film industry. His debut came with the film “Fashion,” but it was his role in “Kaanch Ki Gudia” (1960) that marked his arrival as a lead actor.​

Manoj Kumar’s portrayal of patriotic characters earned him the moniker “Bharat Kumar.” Films like “Shaheed” (1965), based on the life of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, and “Upkar” (1967), inspired by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” showcased his deep-rooted nationalism. He continued this trend with “Purab Aur Paschim” (1970) and “Kranti” (1981), both of which he directed and acted in, further cementing his status as a stalwart of patriotic cinema.​

Cause of Death

Manoj Kumar had been battling age-related ailments, including complications related to his heart and liver. He suffered a heart attack leading to cardiogenic shock, compounded by liver cirrhosis, which ultimately led to his passing at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

State Honors and Funeral

In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema and his embodiment of nationalistic spirit, Manoj Kumar was accorded full state honors during his funeral. His mortal remains were draped in the Indian national flag, and the Mumbai police provided a ceremonial guard of honor. Family members, close friends, and admirers gathered at his residence to pay their final respects before proceeding to the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle for the last rites.

The news of Manoj Kumar’s passing elicited heartfelt tributes from various quarters, including political leaders and film industry colleagues.​

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”

Actor Akshay Kumar reminisced about the influence Manoj Kumar had on his own sense of patriotism, sharing, “I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir.” ​

Ajay Devgn highlighted the personal connection his family had with Manoj Kumar, noting that Kumar gave his father, Veeru Devgan, his first break as an action director in “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan.” He added, “Manoj ji’s films weren’t just films…they were national emotions. His creative genius, unwavering patriotism, and storytelling depth set a benchmark that very few have matched.” ​

Veteran actor Prem Chopra advocated for the highest civilian honor to be bestowed upon Manoj Kumar, stating, “He should’ve been honoured with Bharat Ratna. He did so much for the country through his films. Every movie of his carried a message that glorified India.” ​

Legacy and Achievements

Manoj Kumar’s contributions to Indian cinema were recognized with several prestigious awards. He was conferred the Padma Shri in 1992 and received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema, in 2016. Upon receiving the Phalke Award, he presented an idol to President Pranab Mukherjee, symbolizing his deep cultural and spiritual roots. ​

His films not only entertained but also instilled a sense of patriotism and social responsibility among viewers. By portraying characters that embodied the virtues of selflessness, courage, and integrity, Manoj Kumar became a symbol of the ideal Indian citizen.​

The passing of Manoj Kumar is a significant loss to the Indian film industry and the nation. His legacy, however, endures through his timeless films that continue to inspire and evoke national pride.
