Sonia Gandhi, senior leader of the Indian National Congress and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on Thursday morning due to stomach-related issues. The 78-year-old veteran politician is currently stable and under medical observation, with doctors expecting her discharge by Friday.

Admission and Medical Status

According to Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the Board of Management at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Sonia Gandhi was admitted around 8:30 AM on Thursday. She underwent a routine medical check-up and is now stable, with doctors closely monitoring her condition.

“She was admitted today for an abdomen-related issue. However, there is no major concern, and in all likelihood, she will be discharged by tomorrow morning,” said Dr. Swaroop.

The medical team treating her includes Dr. Samiran Nundy, a renowned specialist in gastroenterology. While the exact nature of her health issue is not fully disclosed, hospital sources confirm it is not a critical condition.

Recent Public Appearances and Political Activities

Despite her health challenges, Sonia Gandhi has remained politically active. Recently, on February 13, 2025, she was seen participating in the Rajya Sabha’s Budget session. She also made an impactful Zero Hour intervention on February 10, 2025, urging the government to conduct a population census.

During her speech, she stressed that around 14 crore people are being deprived of National Food Security Act (NFSA) benefits due to outdated 2011 Census data.

“The NFSA, introduced by the UPA government in 2013, has played a crucial role in ensuring food and nutritional security for 140 crore Indians. Millions have been protected from starvation, especially during COVID-19,” she emphasized in Parliament.

Health History and Previous Hospitalizations

This is not the first time Sonia Gandhi has faced health complications requiring hospitalization.

  • In September 2023, she was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital due to fever-like symptoms.
  • Over the years, she has sought medical treatment both in India and abroad for various health conditions.
  • Her most recent hospitalization for stomach-related ailments is being treated with medical supervision, and she is expected to make a full recovery.

Impact on Congress Leadership

As a key decision-maker in the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi’s health has direct implications on the party’s strategic planning and decision-making. While Rahul Gandhi has taken a more active role in recent years, Sonia Gandhi’s presence remains pivotal.

With the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2026, her health and ability to lead the party will be a crucial factor in the Congress party’s strategy.
Sonia Gandhi’s health remains a matter of national interest, given her influential role in Indian politics. The positive updates from the hospital are reassuring, and she is expected to resume her political responsibilities soon. Her prompt medical attention and stable condition bring relief to her supporters and the Congress party.
